Japandi interior design for a 4-room HDB flat

Japandi mixes Japanese restraint with Scandinavian warmth: pale timber, soft natural fabrics and very little on show. In a 4-room HDB flat it makes the rooms read larger, because the furniture stays low and the colours stay close together.

The japandi look

  • White oak and ash joinery
  • Vertical fluted timber on the TV wall
  • Limewashed warm-white walls
  • Bouclé and linen in oat and sand
  • Honed travertine in the bathroom
  • Paper lanterns and hidden cove lighting

Why it works in an HDB flat

HDB rooms are compact and often have a long, narrow living and dining space. Japandi's low furniture keeps sight lines open, and a single run of fluted oak can hide the DB box, aircon trunking or a shoe cabinet without looking like carpentry.

Tips for japandi in a BTO

  1. Keep to two or three woods at most, all in the same warm tone.
  2. Use cove or wall lighting rather than many downlights.
  3. Leave some walls empty: the calm comes from what isn't there.
