Modern Peranakan interior design for a 4-room HDB flat

Modern Peranakan updates Straits Chinese heritage for a new flat: patterned encaustic tiles as a feature, jade green and coral pink on a cream base, dark rosewood and touches of gold. It feels distinctly Singaporean.

The modern peranakan look

  • Patterned Peranakan tiles as a feature
  • Jade and coral accents on cream
  • Dark rosewood with light carving
  • Brushed gold details
  • Rattan and lacquer pieces
  • Porcelain kamcheng jars

Why it works in an HDB flat

One patterned floor or backsplash gives an HDB flat a strong identity without much carpentry. Keeping the rest cream and uncluttered stops the heritage pieces from crowding small rooms.

Tips for modern peranakan in a BTO

  1. Use pattern in one place per room: a floor, a backsplash or a wall.
  2. Let one or two heirloom pieces be the focus.
  3. Pick jade or coral as the lead colour, not both at full strength.
